![]() ![]() They can add SO much production value, a lot more than a slightly blurrier background. Of course I’m exaggerating but it hurts me that people so easily ignore longer focal lengths. Having access to that extended focal range also does more for learning composition. You could get both 11-16 and 24-105 used for around the same price as a new 18-35 and then you’d actually have an effective wide angle option, and a strong focal range to play with.įor me, having more flexibility in focal range is always more useful than a slightly faster lens and I’d argue that it’s more useful in a narrative setting as well. Even a 35mm is often categorized as a wide prime.īut if you need everything an ultra wide can offer, you’re better off with a Tokina 11-16 or 11-20. In that scenario, the 32 is still pretty wide. You’re right about the wide end of things but we’re not talking a huge difference between the 32mm focal equivalent and the 25mm equivalent on the wide end the 18-35 provides with a speedbooster. It’s not a BAD lens, I just think if someone is going to only own one lens, the extra speed the 18-35 offers isn’t as significant as the extra focal range something like the 24-105 offers. There are so many great lenses out there that produce fantastic results, are in a similar price range, and even offer more overall flexibility and yet we’ve found ourselves at a place where the only one that ever gets recommended by the community is the 18-35. In my personal opinion and experience, as a previous owner of the 18-35, it’s an extremely limited lens - without even going into how uninteresting it looks - Again, just my personal opinion and experience. Upvoted you btw because you are clearly on topic and downvoting is not for disagreement people. I do agree that the 18-35 isn't for everyone though, and probably shouldn't be treated as a default recommendation as seems to often be the case in online discussions. But yes, if I wanted to do more travel and run & gun etc a different lens would be better (and some might argue a different camera). My primary goal is to shoot narrative film and I'm on a budget so I got an 18-35 as my only lens. I wouldn't necessarily say that, it depends on what they want to do. People that recommend someone’s only lens to be the Sigma 18-35, for whatever reason, are doing them a disservice. ![]() Won't you be a bit limited going wide though? I'm assuming you mean something like a Canon EF 24-105? With a speedbooster that's around 32 at the widest I think? Still maybe not a bad option if they don't want to go m43. Panasonic H-HS12035 LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm/F2.8 ASPH X Series LensĪ 24-105 is pretty effectively every focal length you might need in a one lens setup. What is the BMPCC?
